Packers/Lions Game Thoughts

December 29, 2019
  • Wow – that was crazy. I’m exhausted having just watched that game. Wow.
  • It is true I think that great teams sometimes just find ways to win…even if it’s super, incredibly ugly. The Packers dug deep today and figured out a way to win. And that’s a good thing.
  • Aaron Jones is a superstar and Davante is as sure-handed a WR as there is. We’re fortunate we had those guys today.
  • LaFleur must have lit into them at halftime. That was the worst half of football the Packers have played in a long time (though the 49ers game was close). No emotion, no execution and no scoring. Painful to watch with so much at stake.
  • Jimmy Graham should not be our starting TE. I liked it when we acquired him but it’s become really obvious over time why Seattle let him go. He’s had his share of drops with us but he rarely gets open and when he does make a catch you know he’s not going to have any yards after the catch. That’s because he’s both really slow and once he catches it, he LOOKS FOR the sidelines so he can run out. At 6’7″ an many lbs he should be able to flatten some DBs but he never does.
  • Defense was atrocious in the first half. They woke up in the second half and essentially won the game or us by limiting Detroit’s offense. But that first half was scary. I know Detroit isn’t nearly as bad as their record indicates but the way we were playing was hard to watch.
  • Aaron Rodgers is not who he once was. From his accuracy issues to his wasting so much time before plays to his increasingly concerning decision-making, we all have reason to be concerned. That first half was one of the worst performances I’ve seen by a Packer QB…ever. Seriously. He was missing guys wide open and making poor decisions left and right. It drives me nuts that people are floating along with the narrative that he’s just adjusting to the fact that this year he’s part of a different offense that features more of a run game – essentially making excusing for what is a clear decline in his performance. Don’t get me wrong, I have always been a fan of Rodgers and do think he belongs in discussions about top QBs in NFL history, but his play has really declined. I would love to see him erase our worries about him by having a big-time playoff performance.
  • All that said, I will give Rodgers credit for turning things around somewhat in the 2nd half (though he still threw several really bad passes). A few of those 3rd down conversions were nice.
  • Lazard is becoming a legit player. I hope he’s OK. I don’t know why we don’t just recognize his potential and get him the ball in line with that potential. Between he, Davante and Jones, we have game-changers out there.
  • Why did we abandon the short passes after that nice TD drive in the 3rd quarter? That worked so well, but then Rodgers (and/or LaFleur) went right back to that nonsense 7+ step drop/hero throw that just doesn’t work.
  • I did like seeing a few more screens called today – and that last one to Jones was a beauty – great throw by Rodgers and fantastic catch/run by Jones that set up the game winning FG. That was a great playcall too in that moment as we obviously caught them off-guard with it.
  • That play by Alexander ended up being huge – even though it was frustrating at the time that he committed such an obvious pass interference. Had he not done that, Detroit scores a TD there and it’s a different kind of game. That was actually a very smart play.
  • That was a gutsy performance by our O-Line including Veldheer and Patrick, to keep us afloat. Those injuries could have easily derailed us.
  • That was a rough game to watch and I apologize if I was drifting pretty negative there. I just was enormously frustrated that we didn’t seem to have the sense of urgency about this game that this game required. But we did somehow muster that sense of urgency in the second half and delivered the win. And I’ll say it again, the fact that we have a bye and a decent chance at homefield throughout the playoffs is pretty amazing. While I thought we’d probably get to the playoffs because the team so badly needed a new coach etc, 13-3 with chance for homefield throughout has exceeded my expectations. Now I just want the guys to have fun, play loose and execute in these playoffs. We’re just unpredictable enough (in terms of what team will show up) that I think other teams will not be excited to play us.

I’m exhausted…wow
