McCarthy on Masthay

Whether you’re a McCarthy fan or not – gotta love this quote (from jsonline here). Especially love the bold part (my bold):

“The punting performance is the finest punting – I can’t tell you how good this feels to say this – this is the finest punting performance I’ve – I’m not exaggerating, I’m not dramatic – the finest punting performance that I’ve ever been a part of in all my years on both sides of the ball. I can’t tell you how happy I am for Tim. It makes me want to cry. I thought he was tremendous. That was, you talk about a field-position game. I thought that was remarkable. He just needs to do it every week now and we’ll be fine.”

While this does seem like over-the-top gushing, the fact is, anytime a punter has a game putting 5 punts inside the 20, it’s a great game. (Ironically, of his 9 punts yesterday, Seattle’s Jon Ryan put 5 punts inside the 20 too.) Still, Masthay was fantastic yesterday and considering he’s still a rookie – I think it’s not unreasonable to believe that he will end up being a considerable upgrade over the guys who’ve been here in recent years.

    Ha ha. No pressure, though.

Also, those three that didn’t get inside the 20 were pretty good, too: a touchback, one out of bounds @ the 23, and that one that hit Swain at the 22.

I’m glad to see him getting the credit he deserves–those punts were a big piece of the win Sunday.

Funny how botgh sides of our kicking game have come together this year. Crosby’s leg is much better and punting yestereday was absolutely assinine. Like MM says tho, week in, week out.

Crap, why am I suddenly starting to feel a little better about MM & TT.

    Scarey–oh well, it was Halloween

Wow – was out of the country for a week and didnt expect to see this score. Or that the punter was a big factor in the win. Great surprise!!

Funny, I’ve wanted to cry about our punting too. I hope to never see Masthay 9 times in one game ever again. Nine times the rest of the season sounds about right to me. Masthay did a great job, but I prefer David Beverly any day.
