Sorry McCarthy – we need a better answer here

Well, I’ve been waiting for the explanation as to why the team cut Aaron Rouse. Here is what Greg Bedard has for us so far:

  • On Rouse: His ability to be consistent and his development were the factors, but there were a lot of them;
  • On choosing Rouse over Anthony Smith: There’s a number of different factors go into it. Timing was an issue. It’s not accurate (that they chose Rouse over Smith);
  • “It’s a real challenge for our assistant coaches, no doubt,” McCarthy said of the situation at safety;
  • On Rouse: “These decisions are made with a lot of information.”

I’m not opposed to signing Matt Giordano and yes, I understand they’re saying Collins should be fine for this weekend. I also can’t pretend to know exactly what “information” McCarthy is referring to here. Still, I find the timing of this strange and foolish. It makes me wonder a bit if Darren Perry (DB coach) is hot-headed and decided he just didn’t like Rouse on the team anymore (maybe he did the same thing with Anthony Smith?).

  1. Ron La Canne Says:

    In 55 apearences as a Colt, he started 6. Let’s hope he can play ST. Maybe they added him because he played with Rodgers at Cal. Maybe then, Rodgers will stop trying to throw MM under the bus and stop doing Post-Game pressers.

    funny Ron – I had that same Cal-connection thought. I wonder if Rodgers gave his two cents re this acquisition.

  3. Joe Says:

    Rouse had poor pad-level.

  4. Trav Says:

    While that is good that Collins will be available for Sunday, starting the game is one thing. Finishing the game, preferibly on the field and not injured, seems to be more of the issue for him.

  5. Ron La Canne Says:

    Trav, Actually it looks like it will be questionable that Collins will be ready. See article at

    Cut Smith Keep Rouse
    Cut Rouse get Giordano
    Bigby is pertually injured
    Bush is still on the Team

    Don’t get me started on the O line/

  6. Ace Says:

    Rouse–cut because—poor tackler, poor in coverage, slow, chronically injured, doesn’t learn well. Bush-not great as a DB but very good on special teams, esp. punt coverage. Over emphasis this year on special teams because they were so bad last year. Thus 3 FBs, Havner etc.

  7. joshywoshybigfatposhy Says:

    i don’t think people’s outrage/surprise about rouse being cut has much to do with what sort of player he is (he is, in my opinion, a slightly below average safety, with big play potential – nothing to write home about) — it has to do with CONSISTENCY and TIMING.

    we’re tired of strange turnover at the wrong times (JOHN RYAN).

  8. 56Coop Says:

    “But there are other factors involved based on availability, without getting into all of that. That’s really the landscape of personnel in the National Football League, timing and things like that, special teams”

    Quote from MM’s interview. Factores involved based on availability. What the hell does that mean?

    And oh yeah, we’ve got the cheapest O line in the NFL…. & it definitely shows.

  9. Ron La Canne Says:

    Alert: MM just anonces Clifton out for at least two weeks. Colledge vs. Allen in a week from Monday.

  10. Ron La Canne Says:

    Rouse just siigned with the Giants. Could we be wrong?

  11. Joe Sixpack Says:

    Has anybody noticed how Ryan Grant rarely breaks a tackle? I watch Adrian Peterson run over guys. Stephen Jackson is a punishing runner. Ryan Grant gets one or two yards and goes down after first contact.

    Yes, today he had 99 yards, but most were after the game had been won, and the Rams gave up. He had huge holes and got 7 yards a few times, but he rarely put up a fight.

    Yes, the Oline has issues, but we will never have a great offense without a really physical and fast RB. Sutton could have been good, but MM and TT had to stick with Grant. That was a mistake.
