Sorry for the short break from Packer coverage – though I must say, Packer world has been dull lately. Anyway, I hate to quote another anonymous source, but another anonymous source passed on some quality info to me today: apparently, Childress said Favre is on the Vikings if Favre wants to play there. But this source also indicated Childress expressed frustration about trying to prepare for the season without the QB position firmly determined.
I still believe Favre has already signed with the Vikings and that he really is just waiting to announce it. The part of me that still has respect at least for what Favre did to help the Packers win, wants to point out that it’s possible that the timing of Steve McNair’s sad death came right around the time Favre planned to announce his return. Favre and McNair were somewhat close so Favre may have decided to postpone his announcement until things settled a bit. On the other hand, the bigger part of me that is really just ticked at Favre, wonders if the delay is due to Favre wanting to make sure his announcement comes at a time when it will capture the maximum amount of attention. (Actually, Favre saying he’ll decide by July 30th would support the idea that Favre just wants to wait until closer to the time that fans tune back into the NFL – the start of training camp).

With anticipation building for Brett Favre’s formal arrival in Minnesota, the local media is making preparations for the event.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune has launched a “Brett Favre Page,” devoted to the man who is widely expected to play quarterback for the local team in 2009.
Though many of you already are sick of all the talk about Favre, the fact remains that his addition to the defending NFC North champions makes them even better equipped to compete in a conference that is as wide open as any conference ever has been.

Whether or not Brett Favre signs with the Vikings — and Cris Carter assumes he will — the team could face fallout from within, according to the former Vikings receiver. Carter said this isn’t easy for the two quarterbacks waiting until the last minute to become Favre’s backups or the team’s primary options. Brad Childress had designated Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels to compete for the starting job earlier in the offseason, and the Vikings coach eventually will have to deal with them.

I do feel bad for Sage Rosenfels. He signed with MN and moved his family specifically because he was told he could compete for the starting position. Now he’s basically being told that if Favre wants to play he can compete to be back-up.
I also wonder if Favre can even last a whole season. His offseason workouts seem limited to throwing with a high school team for the last couple of months. At 40 years old your body gets tired and he doesn’t seem to be trying to stop that from happening aroud week 10.

This board announced weeks ago that it was done deal, quoting the ubiquitous “sources” and rumors, so I’ll be interested to see the reaction if he doesn’t sign with the Vikings.
I agree with Driver’s sane and rational opinion that if a team lets you go, you should be allowed to play wherever you want.
Minnesota wants him and if he still has the “fire in the belly”,
I have no problems with him in a purple uniform. To me it just adds to the excitement of the great season ahead for an excellent Packer team.
I’m so weary of the Favre-bashing. Not on this board, but perusing other venues, it’s become insane, irrational and a complete waste of time and energy.
I still don’t have a lot of confidence re Rodgers in a close game, but we have our franchise QB…concentrate on him and the Packers.

I have plenty of confidence in Rodgers in close games. Our O-line, kicker and defense on the other hand . . . I was at the game in MN last year where Jared Allen was able to get to Rodgers like there was no O-line period. I saw how the defense let the Vikings march right down the field at the end of the game and I saw Mason Crosby miss a game winning field goal.

And he is allowed to play wherever he wants. That isn’t a question. However, just because you are allowed to do something doesn’t mean you should do it. I’m allowed to get completely trashed every night if I want. Doesn’t mean I should do it. You have to wonder what is worth being viewed as ‘the enemy’ by your former teammates and friends as well as the fans who supported you for 16 years.
I don’t think he does have the ‘fire in the belly’. If he did he wouldn’t have retired in the first place (or the second time from the Jets) because he’d want to play. He would have had the surgery right away and been working out with a trainer like he did before the 2007 season. And he certainly wouldn’t need until July 30th to make a decision.

He hasn’t signed the deal yet because he wants to reserve the right to change his mind. He is pretty sure he wants to play but he has been burned before with deciding too early. So, he is hell bent on making this decision based on his timetable. So, Favre’s arm has given him an out if he changes his mind and the Vikings seem so eager for a better QB that they are willing to wait. I think he ends up playing but how frigging funny would it be if he bailed the week before training camp.

Yeah, Favre is a bore…so let’s talk about a-rod, not the NYY choker, but our very own choker, Aaron Rodgers.
Every NFL review I’ve seen commend his meaningless 2008 stats, but point out his inability to win close games. Maybe the rest of you are in love with him, but I’m not giving him a pass this season.
Thompson/MMC improved the defense, or so we are constantly told. Rodgers has the luxury that few NFL QB’s have..a brilliant receiving corps. No alibis if the Packers don’t win the division and/or make the playoffs.
Even if Favre is a Viking..he is still a huge question mark. Driver was correct, Chicago has no receivers and who knows re Detroit. The NFL north title is up for grabs and ripe for GB and I’m putting it squarely on Aaron Rodgers to get it done.
I agree with Hallstrom. It was convenient to blame last year’s malaise on Favre.
Rodgers and the Packers have NO excuses this year.

I watched all the games last year. I saw Aaron Rodgers take hit after hit because th O line couldn’t protect him. He played hurt and he played well. I watched the defense not stop the opposing run, and give up big pass plays. And I saw a special teams that, while they could run onback every once in a blue moon, let the opposing team get way too much field. I saw that Aaron did take the team down and score towards the end of a game. All the defense needed to do was hold for, like, two minutes and they couldn’t do it. What games were you watching?

No one is giving Rodgers a pass, but I think most people acknowledge that there were other factors involved in the 6-10 record than Rodger’s alleged choking. There were two games where he set up a winning field goal and Crosby lost. There were other games where Rodgers led a drive for the lead and the defense gave up a score to the other team. Could Rodgers have played better and does he need to play better this year? Yes. But the defense needs to play, Grant needs to make more big plays and Crosby needs to make the clutch field goals. The QB has a big role in the game, but it is still a team sport.

I give up. Your passionate defense of Rodgers was admirable, and I apoogise for venturing an unfounded negative critique of the QB.
Aaron Rodgers is a great signal caller and bears zero responsibility for the 6-10 record.
It was everybody else’s fault.
Other NFL QB’s are held accountable for their team’s record, but I guess as Rodgers plays in Green Bay, he will be exempt from criticism for the rest of his career.

You know campbell, given how much you complain about people bashing Favre sure seem willing to do the same for Aaron Rodgers.
Yes, Rodger’s bears some responsibility for the losses. The game in Tampa is a good example. There were other times he missed reads or didn’t play as well as he could have. But he’s only one player and he can’t bear all of the failure. Just as Favre wasn’t totally responsible for the 4-12 season. Had the O-line protected Rodgers so that the Vikings didn’t get two safeties, there is a good chance the game would have turned out differently. The QB is only one person. The Packers were 5th in the league in average points per game. Unfortunately the defense gave up almost as many points on average. The QB can’t sack the opposing QB, they can’t block the other teams pass rushers, and they can’t kick field goals. And those are all areas where the Packers need to improve. Blaming everything on Rodgers (and/or putting the success of 2009 all on Rodgers’ shoulders) is ignoring large parts of the game.
