Check out this ESPN video with John Clayton discussing the latest news that Favre is apparently going to meet with Brad Childress this week. Concerning. One interesting thing Clayton said is that apparently when Favre retired from the Jets he told someone there that if he ever played again, the only team he’d play for would be Minnesota. Tony Dungy somehow told Chris Mortensen that if the Favre/Childress meeting actually takes place, chances are better than 50/50 Favre sports an incredibly ugly purple uniform this year. I’m not liking where this is going.
If Favre comes back, I’ll say it again, I won’t be too excited to play the Vikings. I think they would be very good. I heard a ton of people on Homer’s show (ESPN Radio Milwaukee) going on and on about how bad he’ll be and how we’ll finally get to be on the receiving end of his errant passes. I do hope that happens, but I doubt it. For 2009, assuming he will be healthy again by the beginning of the season, I think it’s more likely that Favre will make the Vikings better. Even though I still don’t think Tarvaris is that bad, the Vikes, like the Bears have not had much confidence in the QB position for a while now. Like the Bears acquiring Cutler, the Vikes acquiring Favre could have a massive impact on the team’s self-esteem.
From an Xs and Os standpoint, apparently the offense of Childress and Bevell is very similar to Mike Sherman’s offense with pieces of Mike Holmgren’s offense sprinkled in there too. So, it won’t be totally starting over for Favre at all. I think it’s also possible that Favre may not feel the need to press and make stupid throws as much because of the damage his superstar RB Adrian Peterson does on most plays. If this were 2008, I could have said “at least he doesn’t have anyone to throw to” but this year, I really believe Percy Harvin could cause fits for teams and TE Visanthe Shiancoe came on last year and proved he may have been worth the huge contract he signed a few years ago. Even though Favre did chunk it toward the end last year for the Jets (of course, so did the rest of the team – especially the running game folks), the Jets had a winning season after having a 4-12 record. Favre wins and he always has (1 losing season in all his years) – so from the perspective of a Packer fan who just wants his team to win, I don’t want Favre going to Minnesota because it could very well interfere with the my plan for the Packes to make the playoffs. (And yes, it’s possible Favre could steer the Vikes to the playoffs only to choke badly due to diminished mental strength, but that won’t give me any satisfaction if the Pack doesn’t get to the playoffs.)

I was looking forward to the day we can all forget about Brett behaving like a child and just remember the good stuff. If he plays in Minnesota, that day moves out by 10 years, at least.

I actually think that is a big assumption. The Jets doctors thought he would need surgery to repair his torn bicep in order to play. He hasn’t done that, nor does it seem like he wants to. And that injury seemed to significantly affect his play last season.
However, he could be scary if healthy. I really wish he would grow up and just stay retired.

Packerbelle – you’re right, that is a big assumption if Favre doesn’t have the surgery – then he may have further issues. But from what I understand, any kind of surgery would still have him back by mid-summer, so it doesn’t seem like it would be a procedure that would set him back too much. And, my guess is that his health will be a major factor in working out a deal with the Vikes – I would be surprised if they let him let it “heal itself”.

Favre had one losing season at GB. Yes! Don’t you think other players and especially the defense also played a role in that outcome? It is now and was always the GB PACKERS, not the GB FAVRES. I totally reject the idea that one person makes a team.

Ron – understand your point, and I agree, a team wins as a team and there are lots of factors that contribute to a team’s success. And of course, Favre was not the only reason Packer teams won when he was here. (I’d also point out the irony in the fact that while Favre may usually have a winning record, he’s been acting like a total loser.) Still though, I don’t think it’s a small thing when a particular player tends to be part of teams that win more frequently than not – especially at the QB position. Like Brady and Manning, the teams Favre are on tend to win and it’s simply this tendency that concerns me.

Andy, you think Tarvaris gets released if Favre signs there? They are not going to keep four QB’s on the roster. They just gave up a 4th round pick and around $4-$5 million a year for Sage. Does that leave Tarvaris the odd man out or do they give up on Booty in year two?

A QB is one big missing piece in the Vikes team. A healthy Favre will be very dangerous. One thing I will say is the NFC North should be very exciting this year, much more so if Favre goes to the Vikes. If that happens I hope Capers & his modified 3-4/4-3 really gets together and as higster suggested earlier the pass rush gets very, very effective. It might be kind of poetic if Favre were to be “forced” to retire because of injuries sustained against the Packers. I honestly do not wish that on the guy but it would be one hell of a story line. I Wonder if Childress will require Favre to have surgery before signing? I am really curious though–Favre gave us 16 pretty exciting years of football. IF he does sign with the Vikes what does everyone here think. Retire his jersey, let him retire as a Packer (if he wants to) or not? My thinking is after it’s all said & done and he does ask to retire as a Packer then fine, retire it & put him on the wall. If he carries this apparent grudge so far as to not even want to retire as a Packer, then no–don’t do it.
This whole thing really sucks—-I hope Aaron has the season of his life this year.

Good points 56 coop – my guess is that if Favre went to the Vikes, so many fans would turn on Favre that retiring his number may end up being too unpopular a move by the team.
DaveK, great question. What do you think will happen? Not sure what they’d do. If I had to guess though, I could see Tarvaris being the odd man out in part because cap-wise, I think the Vikes wouldn’t want to keep T-Jack, Sage and Favre all on the roster. And at this point in their careers, I’d think Sage would be more accepting of a back-up role. I think Tarvaris would likely be bothered by the signing of Favre and perhaps ask for a trade or to be released. (I could see a team like Seattle being interested in him considering Jim Mora has already done quality work with a talented athlete/QB in Michael Vick).

I think Jackson and Sage would both have real issues about being #3 on the depth chart so they probably need to get rid of one of them. I don’t see them tossing Sage after the deal and draft pick they just gave up to get him. Probably be Favre, Sage, and Booty. That might be the best thing that ever happened to Jackson.

I would be so over this if it weren’t for the Favre shrine in my 13 year old’s bedroom. The whole thing reminds me that ultimately we are rooting for laundry…the uniforms matter, but the guys in them don’t. This is sad and contributes to my cynicism. That being said, I can’t wait for November 1 when we blitz him on every play and leave him dragging his sorry old butt off the frozen tundra at halftime only to catch site of the Packer faithful re-retiring #15. Give #4 to any practice squad player who wants it.

From what I’ve been reading it’s all about Brett’s hatred of Ted Thompson and his wanting to “stick it” to the Packers. I can only hope that retiring, un-retiring, then retiring and un-retiring makes him the laughingstock of the NFL.

Re: the surgery:
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that free agent Brett Favre is willing to undergo a “minor” procedure on his torn right biceps tendon that would allow him to play football this season.
Favre is reportedly “anxious” to sign with Minnesota and prepared to get the arm fixed. Surgeons would cut the tendon and the rehab period “would be quick.” Favre and Brad Childress will continue their meetings today in Hattiesburg. We’re expecting a resolution by early next week at the latest. May. 7 – 8:53 am et

I still think Favre is not coming back. Chilly is playing this up because he likes poking the Packers and their fans, while Favre (and his posse) like the attention. But at the end of the day, he’s not going to play football for the Vikings or anyone else.
That’s my prediction, and I’ll stick with it until I change it.

I know Ron. I’m willing to admit when I was wrong but it won’t keep me from viewing the truthfulness of Favre, Cook and likely Childress very skeptically.

We know better than to trust the media. And after last year, we know better than to trust Brett. The guy’s word just doesn’t mean anything. Childress may not have met with Favre today. That doesn’t mean they haven’t been talking. That doesn’t mean they won’t hook up next week. Like Packerbelle says, we’ll just have to wait until September for sure.

Whatever….
Anyone think Levi Jones would make a good RT for the Packers this year? I honestly have no idea. 35 years old. Injured last year but a few things I have read still say he can play. He was cut when they drafted Andre Smith. Seattle is looking at him I guess. My hunch is that he is over the hill but maybe someone on here would have a more informed opinion.
Other notes:
The Bears are interested in Amani Toomer and possible Joe Horn. I wonder who else they will find in the bottom of that barrell?
Jason Hunter got cut. Can’t play DE or OLB in the 3-4. Heck, he couldn’t play DE in the 4-3.
Anything else to stop us from talking about Favre?

As far as postings being all about Favre go back & look at the posts in the days prior to the draft. I think you’ll find that the majority of the folks here are football savvy, die hard Packer fans that like to discuss all things Packers–which at the moment happens to include an old guy with a bad arm that at least today it appears, is not coming back.

Not when you live in MN and he’s thinking about coming here. I can’t even check local news online or on TV without running into it.
There is also the fact that for a lot of us Favre was an important guy. He’s a big reason I’m a football fan and he and Rodgers are the only starting Packer QBs I remember. To have him basically wanting to screw over the Packers is frustrating.
