Cutler to the Bears

Wow. Read here. Can’t believe the Bears have actually pulled the trigger here. Sounds like they gave up a bunch to get him too:

  • 2 first round picks
  • 1 third round pick
  • 1 poor-beard-growing Kyle Orton

In return they get Cutler and a 5th round pick.

What surprises me is that the Bears actually made an aggressive move. They don’t often do stuff like this. While I hope that this serves as a wake-up call of sorts for Ted Thompson (…that other NFC North teams aren’t just sitting around: Detroit with a bunch of new players, MN as reigning NFC North champs and Chicago now with a reputable QB), I have to say, I am not a big fan of Jay Cutler so I am not as frightened by this signing as other Packer fans.

Look, Jay Cutler is good. He has thrown up some pretty impressive stats since starting for Denver. But I don’t think he’s going to be that good in this division with the Bears. He won’t have Brandon Marshall, Tony Scheffler and Eddie Royal. He’ll have Matt Forte and that’s about it. Also, in general last season, Orton didn’t get the greatest protection so Cutler could be running for his life (especially from the Pack’s new 3-4).

The best part of this is that really, ever since he came into the league, I have not been a fan of Cutler – seems like a tool – so it won’t be difficult for me to hate him as the new QB for the Bears.

At least Cutler fans will be able to grab him in last round of the fantasy drafts…

How do you think Jay Cutler will fair in Chicago? I don’t know if he can take criticism very well, may not be a good fit. Plus no WRs to throw to!

Wow. Two firsts and a third is a lot to give up for anybody. Factor in that Cutler just Favred his way out of Denver, the Bears still don’t have anyone for him to throw to, or much of a running game, and an aging defense…

Maybe they did this just to keep him away from the Vikings?

Dave – nice use of “favred”…may need to borrow that from you.

And soon Bus Cook will be asking for more money because the poor baby is underpaid. Couldn’t happen to a better team.

The Bears also signed Orlando Pace to join their team. At least they’re making an attempt to better their team. Hopefully, it won’t work.

When has that ever been hard?

i’m repeating my point from the far off distant land of cheeseheadtv, but i am a bit guarded when i think that the packers had pretty mediocre receivers (usually one pretty good and nothing else) and an average defense during sherman’s tenure. we won a bunch of division titles with a big-armed qb. yes, i know it’s not a perfect comparison. but be careful what you … aren’t so scared of. and lest we forget, we went 6-10 last year, are entering this season with almost entirely the same personnel, a handful of new coaches and a new system on defense.

as far as the scheme/coaches go – that’s a coinflip as to whether it’s a positive or a negative, at least for a year or two.

we may have a renewed rivalry in a few years.

  9. Dave In Tucson Says:

josh: the Packers also had a very good running tandem in Green and Davenport during (most of) the Sherman years. One of the big reasons the Packers went 4-12 in ’05 was that Green and Davenport only played in 5 games each before landing on IR. Samkon Gado was the Packers’ leading rusher that year (and he didn’t make it to the end of the season, either).

    i feel better. thank you.

(that’s sincere. i had forgotten about how much i enjoyed watching green run at linebackers and over safetys.)
