Ok, it happened again. I know, I know, the Shawshank Redemption is a good movie. It’s well done, interesting, good acting, etc. But if I hear another person state “I don’t know, it’s probably in my top 5”, I’m going to puke. It is officially now cliche to put this movie in your top 5…even if it legitimately belongs there. On Homer’s ESPN radio show in Milwaukee, Homer interviewed Braden Looper, the Brewers newest signee. When Homer asked for his favorite movies, I cringed and I said to myself “100% chance he’ll say Shawshank”. Sure enough, he said Shawshank immediately and because Homer and his sidekick also put that movie in their respective top 5s (of course) they anoited Looper their new movie critic going forward.

in the off season perhaps your responders should identify their favorite sports movie– you could post them.
I’ll start 1-Hoosiers, 2-Babe #1–that is the sheep herding pig, 3-Lou Gehrig story. Last-Field of Dreams.

If a lot of people were to include, say The Godfather in their top five- would you feel the same way? Because I’m pretty sure a lot of people do. What about Citizen Kane or Casablanca? The Shawshank Redemption probably wouldn’t make my personal top five- but it’s probably not too far out of it.
The movie that aggravates me when I see someone listing it as one of the all-time greats is Gone With the Wind. I DVR’d it last year when it was on Turner Classic Movies; so many people ranked it so highly, I had to see it for myself. Not only was it a mere afternoon soaper level drama- it was offensive as hell. I mean, seriously, maybe in 1939 people were ok with that crap, but not in the 21st century. Pure garbage. Not even worth being on the same shelf as Shawshank.

I’d have to agree with Bucky…if a movie that was on your top 5 list was constantly mentioned by others I suspect you wouldn’t have a problem with it. Good analogy with The Godfather.
I think Shawshank Redemption is a very good movie…but, to follow up on Bucky’s thoughts, I actually am surprised by Citizen Kane constantly being mentioned as the “best” movie, because I feel it pales in comparison to some of the other all-time greats, like Casablanca, The Godfather, Road House…etc…

Bucky, Schaef – The other ones that often creep up into top 5 lists can also be annoying, good point. Especially ones like Citizen Kane and Gone with the Wind – I think some people include some movies like that due to insecurity that their taste wouldn’t be considered refined if they didn’t include them. That said, I think Shawshank bothers me in particular because it seems extra “cool” to just say it’s in your top 5 and sometimes I think some people who have never really thought about their top 5 just say it’s in their top 5 so that they can stay a part of the “in” crowd.
