The following is from Adam Schefter NFL.com Perhaps most interesting is Schefter’s implied comment suggesting the possibility that Green Bay is not an enticing place to coach:
As it has attempted to fill its defensive coordinator job, Green Bay has brought in Mike Nolan and Gregg Williams. Nolan took Denver’s defensive coordinator job, while Williams went to New Orleans. Now, Green Bay has New England assistant coach Dom Capers visiting and interviewing for the job. Which means Capers is likely to land a job elsewhere.
If Green Bay could hire him, Capers would be a superb addition. He has respect around the league, experience in the game and will be coaching somewhere soon. But Green Bay has struggled to close defensive coordinator deals this offseason. Now it gets another chance.
I can’t pretend to know much re Capers as a D-Coordinator. But I do remember that as a head coach, along with Wayne Fontes, Capers was one of the original “clueless face” coaches. I remember thinking about him as I wrote a post on coaching in the moment a few weeks back. That doesn’t mean he would be a bad d-coordinator and he does have solid experience which may help McCarthy a bit. We’ll see.
UPDATE: read here from Wikipedia – not so sure we should be interviewing Dom Capers. While Wikipedia info isn’t always right, I don’t find this to be a very flattering entry. And, I am not impressed by coaches who spend all their time at the office. I think a lot of the time, working long hours can be more of an indication of an inefficient work-style than actual hard work. I’d rather have a coach who works 8 hours a day but works intelligently and efficiently. Working long hours didn’t seem to help Capers to a winning record, that’s for sure.

Capers wouldn’t be the worst choice for DC. I think he was the DC for Pittsburg before his head coaching job at Carolina. Pittsburg’s defense was ranked very high if I recall correctly. He also was DC for a highly ranked New Orleans defense.
He has certainly proven that being a head coach is a little over his head but I wouldn’t be afraid to give him a shot as DC. What’s going to sting is if HE turns us down. I actually thought he was interviewing in Denver for some postition.
And remember, Capers was the coach that allowed the Pack to get back to the Super Bowl in 96. (Gotta admire him for that)He brought his 12-4 Panthers to the NFC Chamionship game and the Pack sent him back home with his tail between his legs.

I think Capers would be ok as a D coordinator. Some guys are excellent defensive coordinators, but are not cut out to be head coaches. Think Buddy Ryan, for example.
According to that Wikipedia article, Capers is expected to sign on with the Broncios any day now.

56 Coop is right: Capers was the Steelers’ def-con for three years in which the unit rose from 13th to 3rd to 2nd (to Dallas by 0.8 YPG allowed). So he was a very good defensive coordinator. (Or Pittsburgh’s front office drafted a lot of defensive talent.)
The downside is that this was 1992–94, and since then he hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory, as Andy notes.

Capers is one of the best defensive minds in the NFL and would be a vast improvement over Sanders. He was not a great head coach, much like Dick LeBeau. As I wrote over on CHTV earlier – please God yes.

gruden can coach special teams… he’d be awesome, in fact make HIM a gunner on the punt and kickoff coverage teams … doubt he’ll take ademotion of this magnitude, but we need some killer instinct on special teams

I was joking about Gruden, but on second thought: Gruden’s an EXCELLENT x’s & o’s guy, he’s a Champ Head Coach, and he’s known to replace players abruptly when they aren’t performing up to his standard. He’s not a DC, and he’ll most likely find work very soon. If not, the Packers should find a position for him to coach, or better yet, Special Teams.

I don’t know much about Capers as a DC. As a Head Coach he seemed quiet and measured in his approach to the game. Whatever he was in the past let’s hope he brings a new and aggressive approach to the Packer Defense. Good Luck Dom!
