Good. This is better for the NFL. However, as a Packer fan, this isn’t good news. I’d grown rather fond of being assured the Lions would not improve via the draft or free agency from year to year.

I agree it’s not good news for the Packers, but I think that Detroit is still a long ways away from seriously challenging the Packers supremacy over the NFC North. I’ve never been able to drum up the same disregard for the Lions that I hold for the Vikings and the Bears (and Tampa Bay back in the day!). However, this begs the question, who the hell thought a terrible FOX Sports announcer would make a good President/GM? They should probably find an alternate career path as well!

Very much with you on that Scott. I don’t feel like Detroit is any sort of threat at least for a couple years. They’ve got some rebuilding to do over there big time (though whoever comes in cannot do a worse job than Millen).
I remember him as an annoying announcer too – not sure what they were thinking.

as much as it does hurt to see a division foe upgrade their circumstance (and i think they upgrade whether they even hire a new gm at all or not – addition by subtraction), i do feel like millen was such a negative pull on the world that the skies are a bit bluer without him standing in that luxury box at ford field, overseeing the great debacle that was his doing. even for packer fans. for a few days.
i can’t imagine what lions fans feel like. i bet it’s a bit like hearing of Stalin’s death from a traveler somewhere in the yakutskian countryside.

I would think it would be bad news to your overall mission statement at packergeeks. If I remember, the goal is to compile and document your body of work in order to rise into the GM position. With Millen trying to make the leap from TV analyst to GM, he was taking a similar path and trying to blaze a trail for you. I think the damage control needs to start now for you two in order to distance yourself and not get lumped in with Millen.
As a Packer fan, I will miss watching them draft another wide receiver in the first round each year. They are 4-5 years away from making any type of noise in the Central.

Statement from Packergeeks: While most in the print and broadcast media are competent and insightful and decent candidates to eventually be team GMs, some are not. Matt Millen was not. And while Packergeeks certainly appreciates the precedent set by Millen going from media to GM, Packergeeks also recognized from day about -900 (yes, nearly 3 years BEFORE he took the job), that he would be a horrible GM. In fact, the email from one Packergeek to the other around that time went like this:
“Dude, Millen sucks, he’s going to be bad. In fact, I’ll bet he ends up wasting a huge number of draft picks on WRs. I also bet that he hangs on there for a while despite intense pressure from the entire sports world to can him.”

A possible short term benefit for the Packers is that the firing of Millen says that the organization is fed up with his inability to draft a team, which implies that the organization does not think the current players are worth a warm bucket of spit. Now, it could play out two ways. 1. The players try to prove they are as great as Millen thought or 2. they begin to question themselves. Based on the last 4 years I think option 2 is more likely.

The Lions will continue to have bad teams no matter who the GM is as long as the Fords control the team. The Lions need a new owner almost as bad as they need a new GM. Do you know anyone who wants to buy a “work in progress” on the cheap?
