Two weeks ago, we highlighted this nugget in a story by Jason Wilde.
According to one NFL source, Cook had contacted the Vikings about Favre playing for them, given his close relationship with Bevell — a former University of Wisconsin star — and the offense being similar to the one the Packers ran under former coach Mike Sherman.
Now comes word, in a fascinating and compelling piece by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s Bob McGinn that Favre’s Packer-issued cell phone made “repeated calls” to Darrell Bevell and Brad Childress. He writes: “Complicating the matter is the Packers’ tampering charge against the Minnesota Vikings for what appears to be an amateurish mistake by Team Favre-Cook. One source said Favre had continued to use his Packers-issued cell phone. When the Packers checked his phone log, there were repeated calls to coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.”
That Favre wanted — and wants — to play for the Vikings is now such a commonly accepted fact that ESPN’s Chris Mortensen didn’t even feel the need to source the claim when he declared Favre “clearly prefers to play for the Minnesota Vikings” over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
UPDATE: The Minneapolis Star-Tribune posted an item this morning citing some of the same quotes we highlighted last night. The article notes that the NFL sent security personnel to Minneapolis to interview Vikings officials, likely including Childress and Bevell.
