Billick gone – Packergeeks on that

by

Again, in the interest of accountability, we are in the habit of digging back into past comments/posts we’ve made to see how things end up. This one from 3 weeks ago, happens to be a correct call.

“BALT @ SEA (-9.5) – In a way, it’s sort of too bad Billick’s time in Baltimore may be limited (despite what I regard as a fake recent statement of support by the team) because I’ve noticed lately, he is actually looking more and more like a raven, seriously, look at him and then look at the helmet.”

I wouldn’t consider this a great call though because we all should have seen the writing on the wall. He did bring a Super Bowl and one of the NFL’s greatest all-time defenses to Balt, but Billick consistently made questionable play calls and his style had apparently worn poorly on the players. It was time for them to move on. Not sure what will become of his raven-like physical appearance now though.

I wonder if Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti is a avid reader of the blog and remembers our side discussion about Billicks “lack of stones”?

Just never a fan of his. While that’s great the he feels so intellectually superior to his coaching brethren (or more accurately, former brethren), I don’t remember seeing any breakdowns about how his huge vocabulary (as he liked to consistantly show off to the press) helped to win football games. If anything, I think him spending time going to Merriam-Websters’s Word of the Day link took his attention away from things like…. maybe realizing that QBs like Scott Mitchell, Tony Banks, Elvis Grbac, and Stoney Case were just horrible decisions. I believe the term I heard on ESPN about his QB signings was “underwhelming”.

I guess it will be interesting to see if the Ravens go with someone new or go to some coaching re-tread.

Trav – you’re right and I should have acknowledged your comment as well. Hilarious comment. He has always seemed to be quite proud of himself. Whether Newsome has anything to do with it or not, has any coach ever had a worse eye for QB talent (maybe Lovie Smith)? Or, does Billick have a special talent for making QBs terrible? Apparently the Ravens are going hard after Garrett from Dallas – or so a rumor indicates.

A few of us had a discussion about Garrett and there is a theory/rumor floating around that a friend heard that Phillips is actually just a figurehead in Big D and that Garrett is the real head coach. Jones brought Phillips on to mentor him and let him figure it all out without the “sink or swim” experience that most new NFL coaches have. Kind of a bit far-fetched, but then again, I thought the hiring of Phillips was as well.
