If the Vikings hire Mike Zimmer…

by

…I think they will instantly become a better team. I have written about this before but I have a difficult time understanding why Mike Zimmer has been overlooked for coaching vacancies so often. He has made it known in the past that he wants to be a head coach and he’s done a heck of a job over the years as a defensive coordinator. I will be worried if the Vikes hire him because I think he’ll make that defense better and the entire team more competitive (no matter who the QB is).

Zimmer’s defenses since he took over at Cincy in 2008 have finished:

  • 2013 – #3,
  • 2012 – #6
  • 2011 – #7
  • 2010 – #15
  • 2009 – #4
  • 2008 – #12

I think most teams want a head coach who controls the offense. It’s an offensive league. He’ll need someone good to run the offense if they really want to become a contender.

The Caldwell hire in Detroit is puzzling. It seems the #1 priority was hiring someone completely opposite of Swartz’s demeanor and personality regardless of head coaching ability.

I gotta disagree with this. The Vikings had a really good defense 5-10 years ago (remember the Williams wall?) But (with the exception of Favre) their QB situation has been a vortex of suck since they cut Culpepper.

Brad Johnson, Tarvaris Jackson, Kelly Holcomb, Brooks Bollinger, Gus Frerotte, Joe Webb, Donovan McNabb, Christian Ponder, Matt Cassel, Josh Freeman. Most of those guys were playing with Adrian Peterson in the backfield, too.

Zimmer is probably a good hire for the Vikings, but even if he makes a big improvement on the defensive side, he’s gonna need a solid OC for it to matter.

on the other hand, if they hired Hans Zimmer, they’d surely have a really bad-ass theme song before too long.

i’m more interested in what GB cast-off free agents will think more money in purple is worth the humiliation. i really liked desmond bishop and greg jennings, and while all is not roses in GB, i can’t imagine how depressed they must be professionally at this point. Jennings got to watch his old team lose the best player in the league for half the season and still limp (literally) into the playoffs.

i’m guessing either james jones or mike neal are vikings next year.

Hopefully Caldwell will come in and want to “fix” Staffords mechanics and screw him up for a couple of years. I too was worried about Zimmer ending up in this division but like DiT I think they have to find a QB. AP’s been a beast for them for quite a few years now but as long as they stay a one trick pony I just can’t see his body being able to stand up to that pounding for much longer. Course that Gerhart guy doesn’t seem to be a slouch either. Chicago is the team I am most concerned with. I guess we’ll see how FA and the draft shake out. I know it’s way early but I’ve seen 3 mock drafts so far. In the first round they have us picking either a safety, OLB or DE. Was really surprised to see Kevin Greene step away from football. Amy rumors up there?

As much as I want to hate this Kaepernick guy you have to give him credit. Helluva QB.

    Unless he’s playing the Seahawks.
