It's a heck of a coincidence that the best players available happen to directly match our largest needs. :-)

What are the odds the next best player available is a safety?

Note: I am not complaining or being critical.

I think the reality is that the entire best player available theory of drafting was the natural result of the ridiculous rookies salaries. In order to trade up to get the guy you needed, the price was other picks PLUS 5 to 20 million dollars (depending on how far up you moved). Thus, GMs said to heck with that, I'll just take the best player available when its time to pick. Now that the rookie salaries are set by formula, the reality is that teams can afford to target their needs. I think we saw this play out with all of the trades yesterday. Teams were moving all over the place to get the right guy. Now the cost is only the picks you give up.

TT will never admit he has changed his philosophy but I think he has to have done so in light of the changed cost factors. That said, what better players were left at 28? I am not sure we didn't get the best player available.

I think, especially in the first round, team needs has to inform who you pick. Taking a guy who has the potential to be a starter from week 1 seems like an eminently reasonable choice to me, even if he isn't absolutely the top BPA.

And in the case of the Packers, having an effective pass-rush guy alongside CM3 could be such a difference maker for the D, I really don't see any reason to complain.
