Packers now America’s Team?

by

ESPN’s Gene W38jf9q39p8nrg0uq34 make a good case for it here. I agree with him on most counts – especially when he talks about how knowledgeable Packer fans are. As a blogger for the Pack who reads ALL comments that come through this blog – I am constantly impressed by how intelligent Packer fans/readers are when it comes to football. Players voted a few months ago on the most knowledgeable football fans – and they chose the Packers.

This is a great franchise and we should proudly accept the title of America’s Team.

Gene who? I figured it had to be Wojciechowski. Either you need a spell checker (not that it would handle that name very well), or that was tongue in cheek.

I’m not sure I see the value of this designation. America’s team? Why? It degrades the originality, history and overall uniqueness of the franchise. It’s not America’s team and never should be. It’s a team that “belongs” to all loyal Packer fans in the US and around the world. For example, I’m from Toronto, Canada. Why would I want to support America’s team? I’M A PACKER FAN!

interesting point christo. perhaps the designation ought to simply be ‘best organization in the NFL’.

(And Tom, yes, that Gene W citing was tongue in cheek.)

Christo – I agree with your sentiments for the most part, but I think the point of the article is an anti-Cowboys thought more so than a pro-Packers one. It has always grated on me that the Cowboys designated THEMSELVES as America’s Team. Who the hell do they think they are? So I think the author’s point could be re-phrased to say: the Cowboys are not America’s Team, heck, if anybody is America’s Team, it has to be the Packers. (In deference to you being from Canada, maybe we should change it to North America’s Team.)

I’ve watched enough NFL network to have learned that the term “America’s Team” was created and applied first by NFL Films – they were the very first ones to apply this term to the Cowboys in one of their weekly sports reels. It had no signficance at the time, but the term stuck for reasons only elite culture critics can ascertain.

  5. Tom Freeman Says:

Huh. Interesting fact. Maybe I have held it against the Cowboys in error all these years.

  6. Nick Says:

I dont care, really, about being “America’s Team”, but I do want to make sure that GB’s status as “Titletown, USA” is cemented next sunday!

Agreed though – I always feel as though we cheer for the best organization in the NFL, if not sports. Those shareholder meetings are pretty cool.

The Packers are so unique compared to any other franchise. It doesn’t have a billionaire owner but is owned by the community. It is the only and will always be the only NFL franchise that comes from such a small community and that creates a different kind of relationship between the Packers and Green Bay. Every time I go to a game I am just amazed that I park on a residential street a few blocks from Lambeau field. No meters. No fee. I park my car and walk three blocks to the gate. I’m also always pleased at how other fans are treated when in Green Bay. I have never seen an incident where someone rooting for the other team isn’t treated with respect and made to feel welcome even if they are getting a little lippy. I guess it is hard to be a jerk when the home team fans are buying you beer and asking you if you need any hand warmers. I’m not saying there aren’t jerk Packer fans but they sure seem to be fewer and far between then anywhere around the league.

I guess I don’t really care if people want to call the Packers “America’s Team” – but will agree with Nick – “Titletown, USA” needs to stay!! I think the tag “Best Pro Sports Organization” is also fitting.

For anyone interested in joining the fun in showing that the Pack has more fans than the Steelers (and a chance to win tickets!!) – register as a fan at http://www.greenbay.com/contests/59b1f7719a60/

No affiliation – just sharing the love (who doesn’t want a chance to win Packers tickets??) :)

I’ve never worried so much about the title of America’s Team. Always thought it was stupid to begin with. Think Vikings/Bears fans would agree?

What cannot be debated (and what actually matters) is that our fans are the most knowledgeable (per NFL players) and loyal (90 season tickets turn over a season!).

  12. Doug In Sandpoint Says:

The Packers are God’s team plain and simple. They play in God’s country. They are everything that is good and right in the world.

What are you guys putting in your beer? You are all totally delusional!!
