Packer playoff scenarios

by

From what I’ve been able to figure, our playoff picture is not too complicated. Ok, as I study this, it is a bit complicated. Remember that Philly has already clinched a playoff spot, though it’s possible they could lose the division title yet to Dallas. But Philly beat the NYG 2x this year, so they own the head-to-head tiebreaker against NYG:

  • Packers are in and clinch the #5 seed if we win our last 2 games no matter what other teams do.
  • Packers are in if we win 1 of our final two games and the Giants lose 1 of their final 3 games.
  • Packers are in if we win 1 of our final two games and Dallas loses 1 of its final two games.

How can the Packers still be elimintated?

  • Packers could be out if we lose both of the last two games, Dallas wins at least one of their last two games and the NYG win at least 2 of their final 3 games. (In this case, the Packers would lose a common game tiebreaker to the NYG – thanks in large part to the embarrassing TB loss).
  • Packers could be out if we lose one of the last two games, Dallas wins both of their remaining games and the NYG win all 3 of their remaining games. Again, we’d lose the tiebreaker to the NYG.

If we lose to Seattle, we don’t deserve to go to the playoffs. I thought for sure we would get the stop when we needed it last night. Jenkins not getting that final sack was just huge. That would have been the game right there.

With you Trav. Seattle is really bad this year. I hope that we come out very very angry and just end the game in the first half. Matt Hasselbeck, in part because of a shoddy line and in part because he’s simply no longer good, should really struggle against us. But Seattle’s defense is highly questionable and we should put up a ton of points even in bad weather.

I’m also more and more concerned now re the Giants because it’s entirely possible they will win their final 3 games – @ Wash, home against Car and then @ MN.

“Mason Crosby’s our kicker,” coach Mike McCarthy said Monday. “He will be our kicker going forward. Zero interest in bringing in a kicker. . . . He needs to do a better job making that key field goal.”

This is not good news..I just don’t get it. With the ease they displayed in letting a HOF’er go I just cannot understand this outright stubborn loyalty to questionable players (Poppinga, Crosby)

  4. Joe Says:

“He needs to do a better job of making that key field goal.” Well, no crap. The problem is that (for whatever reason) he can’t do it. MM’s thinking is just stupid: “John Doe is our running back; he just needs to be faster.” You have two games left till the playoffs, take a look at what’s out there.

  5. Mattster Says:

It is my understanding that Packers will get in if the Giants lose tonight (@Wash) because…

Packers have tiebreaker over Giants (Divisional record) if both 9-7
Packers have tiebreaker over Atlanta (Divisional record) if both 9-7

    any holes in this?

  6. Keefer Says:

Trav’s right…if we lose to Seattle we should pull out the golf clubs and head south. However, we won’t lose and we’ll be 10-5. Based on what I’m watching tonight, NYG will be 8-6 in about 1.5 hours. Dallas will beat Washington next week I expect, taking them to 10-5 too. NYG at home to Carolina? Well, NYG SHOULD win that one to go 9-6.

That sets up a very interesting Week 17. The Giants will be going to Minnesota looking for the win to keep the pressure on Dallas and Green Bay. Dallas will be hosting Philadelphia who will be looking to win to perhaps knock Minnesota out of the 2nd Bye position (assuming they have beaten Denver in Week 16).

Green Bay will be in Arizona facing a team that will be resting players having clinched already and with nothing to play for (and unwilling to show their hand to their likely 1st Round foes).

I think Minnesota might actually be in a position to help Green Bay in Week 17 by fighting for the Bye and holding off the Giants. Philadelphia are going to fight Dallas tooth and nail too.

Green Bay should qualify for the playoffs comfortably given the scenario above. If not, they wil have only themselves to blame.

So, next week while you root the Packers on to a crushing victory, spare a cheer for Philly against Denver; Carolina at New York, and Washington at home to Dallas. And if things don’t work out in Week 16, get ready for a wild Week 17!

  7. Travis Says:

well its even closer now considering greenbay just lost within seconds as giants are trouncing the skins. badly.

  8. Ron La Canne Says:

Simple solution – win next week. There is no excuse not to! Interesting stat from MM – 12 plays acccounted for 326 yds of offense for the Steelers. He feels the problem is technical and can be corrected. I hope this isn’t this years’ “pad levels”.

  9. Joe Says:

nope – this year’s “pad levels” is “we have things we need to clean up”

  10. 56Coop Says:

    “and we’ll get it corrected”.

  11. DreamPipe Says:

and “we’re a good football team”

  12. Trav Says:

DreamPipe – Laughed out loud in a meeting at work when I read your comment. Heads turned in the room, but it was worth it. Well played.

  13. DaveK Says:

If the Packers win both they are in.

If the Packers win one then Dallas and Giants both have to win out for the Packers to miss the playoffs.

The Philly game matters only in the sense that if they win this weekend it forces the Vikings to beat the Giants or risk losing #2 seed. A Philly win also makes it more likely the Cardinals take week 17 off.

Go Carolina! Go Bears! Go Philly! Go Packers!
