I too thought Favre’s comment about this Vikings team being the best team he’s been on was something that might draw the ire of fans/ex-Packers. But then I remembered that he’s said the same thing several times in the last decade heading into seasons with the Packers. I believe one of those years the Pack went 4-12, so I’ve learned take these comments lightly. Anyway, of these Lori Nickel interviews, I think Mark Chmura comes closest to describing how I feel about the whole Favre situation. He says:
“I’m still green and gold all the way. I hate Minnesota; I can’t stand Minnesota. I don’t care if Brett is playing there. It didn’t bother me, him with the Jets. But Minnesota I know personally I could never do it. I would just retire.”
While I became frustrated with his role in the divorce last year and seeing him play elsewhere was difficult, it was Favre joining the Vikings that completed my turn against the guy.

I’d like to see Gilbert invited to the game Sunday and stationed at the tunnel. As farve goes by pick him up and slam him to the tundra. A little grave digger routine over his prone, shattered body would be nice.

So the JS posted this exerpt from Favre’s comments about his quote that true Packer fans would understand why he’s playing for the Vikings.
” But if you’re a true Packers fan, you want the Packers to win. And if you’re a Brett Favre fan, then this week obviously you don’t want me to win. But for the most part you’re, ‘Hey, hope the guy does well but I hope the Packers go all the way.’ Now the people that have jumped ship completely, what can I do? And I’m not going to concern myself with it. I know we have gotten a lot of letters and responses from people, not just this year but the last couple years, very supportive, still very supportive of the Packers. But I call them true fans. There was always Brett Favre haters out there and that will never change.”
So apparently you are only a true fan if you support both the Packers AND Favre.
I will admit that is a better way to phrase it than he did earlier, but he basically still can understand why Packer fans could be pissed at him.

i think i’ve heard brett say this 4 or 5 times in his career since the superbowl years. it means nothing. i think it’s an attempt to get the support of his teammates. he said it when there was an obvious disconnect between him and much younger teammates in green bay, he said something like it last year in ny, it’s all crap.
i’ll reuse a comment i posted earlier over at cheeseheadtv regarding whether people should cheer for brent at lambeau:
here’s my levels of respect and support, from the top down, as constituted right now:
1. the packers (team)
2. current packers players (individuals)
3. current packers staff (coaches, etc.)
4. former packers players (honorable discharge)
5. other packer fans
6. other well-run nfl teams not in the nfc north
7. respectable players playing for another team not in the nfc north.
8. talentless but classy nfl players not in the nfc north
9. classless but talented players not in the nfc north.
10. 8,9, not on the vikings roster, detroit, chicago players allowed.
11. the adolescent kids that carry the coaches’ cables around behind them.
12. ironically enough, these days – tarvaris jackson.
13. washed-up male models with coke habits and breath that smells of liver pate.
14. centipedes who escape my swatting.
15. the invisible hog jared allen keeps tying up – because he apparently keeps untying himself when allen isn’t sacking a qb.

I think the “man who is dead to me” has been rudderless since Big Erv’s passing. I think he had an influence on his boy that has been missing in all of this. My guess is he’d have had Brent out behind the woodshed long before it got to the point of him wearing lavender.
Chewy also hits the nail on the head when he said that he’s not sure anyone fears the Vikings like they did the ’06 Packers. Finally, I just want to say that if I played quarterback for the Vikings I would boo myself.

I agree. I can’t see a guy who ran a wishbone offense when his son was QB putting up with this. I think Big Irv was good at grounding him and not letting him sucumb to the whole ‘legend’ myth.

You can create a Brent Faver #4 shirt here, and I’ve made a few cool ones including “Traitor” on a Viqueens jersey, “Brent Who” on a Packers jersey, and my brother put together a couple amusing ones: “D. Dawson” on a Packers #4, and a “Pick Six” on a Vikes (Dawson was the last Packer to wear #4).

You can agree with someone while thinking they are a scumbag of a human being, as is the case with Mark Chmura.
Secondly, I don’t see anyone here lambasting Favre ‘for whatever’. Favre has always had a habit of saying whatever comes into his head and as the original post noted he has made similar comments in other years. And when you make stupid comments people are going to comment. Just like they commented when Rodgers made his (very ill-advised) comment about how fans needed to get behind him last year.

i think it’s quite clear that the difference between people who have become favre apologists, and the people who can’t stand him right now – has to do with how much people let their respect or disrespect for someone affect their evaluations of immediate things.
the people who think brent’s behavior is justified because he was ‘such a great player for the pack for so long and shouldn’t we cut him some slack?’ are almost always the same sort of people who think that because chewy got in a hottub at a highschool party (totally indefensible and smarmy), that his opinion is invalid on all matters. these are the grudge holders, and the anti-grudge holders (campbell, i’m not saying this is necessarily you). it’s like not letting a guy paint your house because of his political views, and then shrugging it off when the local priest is sacrificing goats to lucifer with the alter boys every tuesday morning.
it aint a packergeeks thing. it’s a judge actions and words on their own merit thing. karma only goes so far for me, then i start actually paying attention to what’s being said and done presently.

I agree. I’ve said it a lot, but I’m not mad at Favre for wanting to play. My issue has been his antics off the field. The guy still is very talented but he’s acting like a jerk. And I don’t find jerks worthy of respect regardless of how well they can throw a football.

I’m not torn about the Vikings or Favre: I want the Packers to win, and the Vikings to lose, and not just this week, but every week. My purely-sports hatred for the Vikings dates back to Fran Tarkenton managing yet another mind-bendingly frustrating escape from Willie Davis’ clutches.
Favre turned around the GB franchise in the 90’s, along with Wolf, Holmgren, Reggie White and the rest, and he will always be a GBP legend, but right now, these last few years, he’s just another player on the enemy’s team.
I used to love the guy, but it seemed clear that he was running out of gas at the end of the last few seasons, dating back 3-4 years, and I cheered the move to Rodgers for the team’s sake. Fifteen years from now I will probably love him again, once all this foolishness is forgotten.

Someone on here, way back, had the idea of total silence except for a few crickets chirping over the PA. An empty rocking chair on the Jumbotron would be nice too.
FOX has just announced they are going to have a Favre cam at the game. It will be on him from the time he enters the stadium until he runs into the locker room. God I hope GB wins this game.

I have to admit, as a vikings fan, i hated Farve for years (will always hate the Packers!!). The guy has a way of creating a “spark” for our team and has been (and will continue to be) the main reason we are super bowl contenders this year. I have definetly drank all of the purple koolaid and am waiting for the big let down (hey, i did say i was a vikings fan so what do you expect). Looking from the outside in, the “spark” is what you are missing, don’t ever kid yourselves, Aaron Rogers will never be that guy (no matter how good his stats are).
