My reaction to the first few days of free agency in 2008: Whew!
This has to have been the worst free agent class in the history of the NFL. Very few of the players worth having actually made it to free agency. And those who did — Alan Faneca and Lance Briggs — were going to be too expensive to play for. So who were the other big fish? Asante Samuel? A former 4th round pick who blew a chance to seal the Patriots’ victory in the Super Bowl last month? He’s a decent cornerback, but I can name probably 10 others I’d pick before him. Bernard Berrian? Are you serious? $42 million for six years to the Vikings? Berrian has never had a 1000-yard season. Alge Crumpler? An old guy with bad knees who defended Michael Vick until the end?
The best thing the Packers could have done is to sit it out. If they can get contributions from second-tier guys like Brandon Chillar and Corey Smith, as they seem to think, great. I trust that Ted Thompson won’t overpay for them.
